Berita 24 English -  Indonesia's disaster agency said in a statement that it was looking into the effects of a strong quake that hit off the southern coast of Sumatra island late Tuesday. As of about midnight, there had been no reports of damage or deaths.

The 6.3 magnitude quake hit at 21:31 local time (14:31 GMT), and its epicentre was 80 km (50 miles) south of the town of Manna in Bengkulu province, at a depth of 52 km, according to the country's meteorology and geophysics agency (BMKG).

About 600 km (375 miles) northwest of the capital, Jakarta, is the town of Manna.

Residents along the southern coast of Sumatra felt the tremor for 2 to 6 seconds, which made some people run out of their homes, according to a statement from the BNPB.

Septi, who works for the Bengkulu agency, said, "It was pretty strong."

Indonesia is in the middle of the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire," a place where a lot of earthquakes and volcanoes happen because different plates of the earth's crust meet.

In February, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit inland near the western coast of Sumatra, killing more than 10 people.
