Berita 24 English - According to state media on Monday, Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of the junta in Myanmar, would prolong the country's state of emergency for an additional six months. The junta's national defence and security council gave its assent, the media reported.

When the military overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi's democratic government in a coup in February of last year, it first proclaimed a state of emergency.

According to the Global New Light of Myanmar, "the members (of the security council) unanimously endorsed the request to extend the declared state of emergency period for another six months."

The article quoted Min Aung Hlaing as saying, "In our country, we must continue to strengthen the 'true and disciplined multi-party democratic system' which is the wish of the people.

Since the coup, Myanmar has been in complete disarray, with unrest spreading throughout the Southeast Asian nation as the army put down largely peaceful protests in the cities.

The junta claimed that voting fraud during the general election of November 2020, which Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi's party easily won, was the reason it had come to power. Groups that monitored the election found no proof of widespread fraud.

Although the timeline has already slipped and opponents do not think the anticipated polls will be free and fair, the military has promised to hold new elections in August 2023.
