Berita 24 English - Kabul police said Thursday that 21 people were killed when an explosion tore through a mosque during evening prayers on Wednesday.
Khalid Zadran, a police spokesman, said that 33 more people were hurt in the blast.
Reuters reported that people in a neighborhood in the north of Kabul heard a loud explosion that broke windows in nearby buildings.
No one immediately said they were to blame for the blast, and the authorities did not say who was to blame.
The Taliban say they are bringing peace back to the war-torn country. Since they took over and beat a government backed by the U.S. a year ago, there has been less violence in the country as a whole. But in recent months, there have been a number of large attacks in cities, some of which were blamed on Islamic State.
Emergency Hospital, which is run by an Italian NGO that helps treat war victims, said in a statement that it had taken in 27 people who were hurt in the blasts, including five children. Stefano Sozza, the country director for Emergency in Afghanistan, said that two dead people had been brought in and that one person had died in the emergency room.
In August, the hospital treated 80 people who had been hurt in six different mass casualty events. These were big things like explosions and mass shootings.
Sozza said, "The country is dealing with the effects of a very long war that has hurt its future."
