Berita 24 English -  According to the country's Chamber of Commerce, Thailand is lacking more than 500,000 foreign workers as Southeast Asia's second-largest economy suffers with a sluggish post-pandemic recovery.

According to Poj Aramwattananont, vice chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, there is a significant demand for workers in labor-intensive industries such as construction, tourism, and service-related industries as well as agricultural goods and food processing for export.

He added that the country will require a total of at least 3 to 4 million migrant workers to get the economy moving forward. "Today, workers are a huge concern for pushing the economy," he said.

Problems in their home countries, like the upheaval in Myanmar, and competition for workers from other nations, including Japan and China, are obstacles to hiring migrant workers, according to Poj.

According to Pairoj Chotikasathien, director of the employment division of the Labour Ministry, there are currently roughly 2.5 million legally registered migrant workers from Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

The cabinet last week approved labour management plans, which included allowing documented workers to remain until February 2025, in an effort to address the shortfall, he added.

Up to February 2025, Thailand will once again permit the registration and employment of illegal employees, including those from Vietnam, Pairoj stated.

At the end of the year, Thailand may have roughly 3 million migrant workers due to improved labour policies and the influx of new workers, he predicted.
