Berita 24 English -  Villagers in Indonesia praised a man who caught a crocodile on the island of Sulawesi with just a rope. The crocodile was longer than 4 metres (13 feet).

A video shows Usman, who, like many Indonesians, only goes by one name, putting a rope around the giant snake's jaws. Usman said that it had been walking around the area for at least two days, scaring people.

"If we had left it, it would have come on land, and we wouldn't have been able to go into the rice fields," the 53-year-old said.

"Around the roads, there are also drainage channels where people fish. If it had crawled up the drains, it would have been dangerous. I had to try something, "he said.

Others in the village of Ambau Indah were happy that the crocodile was caught.

"The people in the community like what Usman has done. Some people even think it was a brave thing to do because it saved so many people who could have been hurt "said Umar Siddiq Al Farizi.

He said that crocodiles had hurt people in the area more than once in the past. He was also glad that Usman had decided to tell the authorities about the capture.

"He (Usman) thought this animal was rare and that floods had hurt its habitat. He thought it should be kept safe instead of being killed "Umar said.

A member of the local Natural Resources Conservation Agency said that the crocodile, which is 4.3 metres long, will be put back into the wild.
