Berita 24 English - The government said on Wednesday that Taiwan will get its first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from Novavax Inc. this week as part of the COVAX sharing programme.

The 504,000 doses would arrive on Thursday at Taipei's main international airport, according to Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center.

Through the COVAX mechanism, Taiwan is expected to get 2.268 million doses of the Novavax vaccine this year.

Although the shot has not yet been approved for use in adults in the United States, it has been in more than 40 other nations, including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

In two significant, late-stage trials, the company's COVID-19 vaccine was demonstrated to be more than 90% effective.

AstraZeneca PLC, Moderna Inc., BioNTech SE/Pfizer Inc., and locally produced Medigen vaccines are now used in Taiwan.

More than 70% of the population of Taiwan has received a first booster shot, and second boosters are currently being distributed.

The 23 million-person island has reported more than 3.7 million infections so far this year despite previously having the epidemic under good control and a decline in new cases.
