Berita 24 English -  According to a final financial estimate, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics cost 1.42 trillion yen ($10.4 billion), over double the figure given in the city's bid for the Games, which was postponed for a year owing to the coronavirus outbreak.

The Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee met for the final time late Tuesday and will be disbanded at the end of the month.

In 2013, Tokyo won the Olympics, presenting itself as a "safe pair of hands" with plenty of cash on hand.

The cost of renovating the New National Stadium, which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies as well as track and field events, increased dramatically in the run-up to the Games.

Costs also increased as a result of the Games being postponed by a year and for measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus when they were finally hosted in 2021 without spectators.

"In the face of enormous challenges, all parties involved worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the Games and its safe and secure execution," said Seiko Hashimoto, president of the organising committee, at a press conference.

Sapporo, the city of Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, is bidding to host the 2030 Winter Olympics.
