Berita 24 English - Ericsson, a Swedish telecom equipment maker, said on Tuesday that it expects global 5G mobile subscriptions to exceed 1 billion in 2022, owing to increased adoption in China and North America.
The corporation reduced its projection for 2022 by roughly 100 million due to a weaker global economy and the uncertainty posed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, according to its biannual Mobility Report.
Ericsson, which competes with Huawei of China and Nokia of Finland, is a significant provider of mobile equipment, including 5G.
While 5G subscriptions increased by 70 million to about 620 million in the first quarter, 4G subscriptions increased by 70 million to around 4.9 billion.
The fifth-generation (5G) networks, which offer far faster speeds than the previous generation, promise to connect equipment in a way that would enable futuristic capabilities like self-driving cars.
In 2027, 5G subscribers are expected to total 4.4 billion.
According to the survey, the number of 4G users will peak this year before declining as consumers switch to 5G. 4G subscriptions were projected to peak last year, according to Ericsson.
If 5G subscribers reach 1 billion this year, it will have done so two years sooner than 4G, which reached the milestone ten years after its inception.
In an interview, Peter Jonsson, executive editor of the study, stated that a push from telecom providers to offer 5G and phone prices as low as $120 has aided 5G adoption. "In 2021, China added around 270 million subscribers, compared to 65 million in North America."
From later this year, India, which is in the midst of auctioning 5G airwaves, is projected to add to subscriber growth.
"In India, we predict roughly 30 million 5G customers in 2022, and over 50 million in 2023," Jonsson said.
