Berita 24 English - A top official at Japan Airlines (JAL) said on Tuesday that the airline aims to make a decision on replacing its ageing fleet of Boeing Co 767s and Embraer SA regional planes in a year or two.

According to Ross Leggett, JAL's head of route marketing, international partnerships, and alliances, the 787 and Airbus SE A321neo families would be considered as possible replacements for its 767 fleet, as well as the A220 and E2 models for regional jets.

"We have a quite significant 787 fleet," he told Reuters on the sidelines of an airline industry event in Doha. "Whether it is an A321 that might potentially be used reasonably well inside Asia as well, we really haven't looked at the entire choice."

According to JAL's website, the airline's fleet consists of 31 767s, 18 Embraer E-170s, and 14 E-190s.

Leggett stated that the airline has regained domestic capacity to 100% of pre-pandemic levels in May, despite demand being around 85% to 95% of 2019 levels.

With China, South Korea, and Taiwan effectively closed and Japan regulating daily entrance numbers, capacity in the worldwide market is around 65 percent of pre-pandemic levels, he continued.

Domestic demand is approximately 80% of pre-pandemic levels at rival ANA Holdings, according to Junichiro Miyagawa, ANA executive vice president in charge of alliances and international relations.
