Berita 24 English - In the latest step to combat corruption, China's ruling Communist Party adopted guidelines to further restrict the economic operations of high government officials' families, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Officials must declare their spouses' and children's business operations, and any who fail to do so or try to get around the requirements would be "seriously dealt with in accordance with regulations and laws," according to Xinhua, citing provisions issued by the Communist Party's Central Committee.

Officials' spouses and children must cease commercial activity, or they would be forced to resign from their current positions and "accept employment changes," among other punishments, according to Xinhua.

Investing in businesses, holding senior positions in private or foreign-funded businesses, investing in private equity funds, and providing paid social mediator and legal services are examples of such business operations, according to Xinhua.

Since President Xi Jinping took office in late 2012, the extended families of Communist Party cadres have become a significant battleground in President Xi Jinping's war on corruption, which has resulted in the punishment of thousands of officials.

Officials have registered businesses and property in the names of relatives in a number of examples of corruption, allowing them to follow party norms to the letter while still utilising their power to gain fortune.

"Strengthening the management of top cadres' spouses, children, and spouses running companies is a key measure to tightly govern the party and monitor cadres in an all-around manner," according to Xinhua, citing party guidelines.
