Berita 24 English - Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co has shut down its crude oil refining and ethylene units to assess concealed safety hazards following a fire at a chemical factory on Saturday, according to a company representative.

The company will assure reliable domestic fuel supply, according to the spokeswoman, who did not say how long the shutdown will last.

The Shanghai-based factory, which is run by state refiner Sinopec Corp, has a crude oil refining capacity of 16 million tonnes per year (320,000 barrels per day) and an ethylene capacity of 700,000 tonnes per year.

China's ministry of emergency management summoned the head of China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec Group), the parent company of Sinopec Shanghai and Sinopec Corp, on Monday following recent safety incidents, the government said in a statement.

According to the statement, Sinopec Group has been requested to improve areas such as ageing facilities and insufficient on-site management.
